TwinSpires Sports is a subsidiary Churchill Downs Inc. which operates online sportsbooks in six states at the moment. More states are coming in the near future.
TwinSpires launched in 2007 as an advance deposit wagering site for Churchill Downs, owners of racetracks across the country. Those tracks include, of course, the eponymous one in Louisville which is home to the annual Kentucky Derby. It’s that track’s iconic steeple-like towers that provided the inspiration for the TwinSpires name. In 2017, CDI purchased another ADW site, BetAmerica, later consolidating it with TwinSpires.

In January 2021, CDI launched the first TwinSpires online sportsbook in Michigan. Additional sites subsequently went live in Tennessee (March 2021), Indiana and Pennsylvania (April 2021), Colorado (May 2021) and Arizona (September 2021), with New Jersey a likely next destination.
Here is an overview of TwinSpires Sports covering the online sportsbook’s welcome bonus and other promotions, how to set up an account and download the app, the types of bets and sports available, and a review of user experience, banking options and the site’s customer service.

For new customers, TwinSpires Sports offers a $1,000 risk-free bet. When registering for your account, enter the offer code FREE1000 when prompted. Then deposit funds and place a bet. If that bet wins, you receive the winnings as usual. However, if that first bet loses, you receive a free bet equal to the amount of the wager up to a maximum of $1,000. TwinSpires Sports says it will issue you that free bet within 72 hours.
You must make your initial bet within seven days of registering for an account. The bet can be on any game, though it cannot be a profit boost or odds boost wager. The free bet is not withdrawable; you must use it to bet. You can place the bet again as soon as you receive it. In fact, you will want to do so quickly, since it will expire after seven days if you don’t.
It’s a nice welcome offer, essentially giving you two chances to make that first wager a winner.
TwinSpires frequently runs a variety of other promotions for its sportsbook users. You can find these by scrolling to the bottom of the homepage, looking under “Promotions” and clicking “Sports.”
Most of these promos require you to opt-in first. Usually, the reward is a free bet and not cash. Some common promotions at TwinSpires Sports include:
In certain states, when you register for a TwinSpires Sports account, you’ll find it linked to the TwinSpires Casino as well. In those cases, you’ll find promotions connecting the casino and sportsbook. For example, TwinSpires sometimes runs a promotion that awards a $25 live free bet in the sportsbook for wagering $50 in the casino.
When you log onto TwinSpires Sports, remember to check the current promotions and be sure to take advantage of those that correspond to bets you were already considering making.
Signing up for an account at TwinSpires Sports is a simple process. Go to the TwinSpires Sports website and click the green “Join Now” button in the upper-right corner. If you’re using the app, you’ll find the same green button on the home screen. You’ll then go through three steps to create your account.
Providing this personal information not only lets TwinSpires Sports know you are who you say you are, it also ensures the security of your account.
If you already have an existing account for TwinSpires Racing, you’ll need to get a second account for TwinSpires Sports. TwinSpires does plan to merge its horse racing site with its sportsbook eventually, but for now, you’ll need to create a separate account.
However, in states where TwinSpires also operates an online casino, when you create your TwinSpires Sports account you’ll also be able to play games on the casino using the same account and wallet.
You can access TwinSpires Sports either via a web-based browser or by downloading the app. The app is available for both iOS and Android devices. You can visit the TwinSpires website and find links to download either app.
The TwinSpires Sports app includes all of the same sports and betting options as the web-based version of the sportsbook. Just like when using the site via a computer, when you use the app, you can additionally access the online casino (in states where it is available). You can also click over to the TwinSpires Racing site, although you’ll need a separate account there.
Meanwhile, on the app, you can perform all the same banking functions, find promotions, access customer support and do everything else you can do on the web-based browser version of the site.
One other nice feature of TwinSpires Sports is the fact that no matter where you are located, you can use the same app. The same is largely true for the web-based browser version of the site, too. The URLs are unique to each state, but you can easily switch from one state to another via a drop-down list at the top of the home screen.
Of course, when placing bets, you’ll have to be physically located in a state where TwinSpires Sports operates. For that reason, you’ll need to enable location services on your mobile device. You’ll have to do the same when using a laptop or desktop computer so TwinSpires can be sure of your location.
You will find all of the usual types of bets available at TwinSpires Sports. In fact, for many sports, you will discover not just the most popular types of bets but an array of non-standard props, all of which are fairly easy to locate and add to your bet slip.
Practically every game or contest listed will offer a chance to bet on the moneyline. That’s the classic bet on one side to win the contest outright without a handicap or other conditions applied. Because most matchups aren’t 50/50, the payouts for these bets are adjusted for the relative strength of the teams. That is, you’ll win more for correctly betting on an underdog to win than for betting on the favorite.
TwinSpires uses standard American odds to show which side is the favorite and what the payouts will be. Somewhat confusingly, these are often described as “moneyline odds,” even when not being used for a moneyline bet.
Here’s how those odds work. Let’s say the Arizona Cardinals are playing the Detroit Lions and Arizona is the favorite. A negative number indicates the favorite, and the amount you’ll have to bet to win $100. If the moneyline for Arizona is -180, that means a bet of $180 would win $100 profit (plus the stake back, so $280 total) if correct. The odds for Detroit might then be +145. The positive number means that this is the profit you’d receive for betting $100. So, there a bet of $100 would win $245 if correct: the $100 stake back, plus $145 profit.
The difference between the two numbers is known as the juice or vigorish and is how the sportsbook makes its money. Since the payouts on the winning side don’t quite equal the losses on the other side, the operator is guaranteed a profit if they can balance the book properly.
Smaller and larger bets pay off proportionally, of course. So, betting $90 at -18o would mean a potential profit of $45, and so on.
In the above example, let’s say Arizona is a 3.5-point favorite. If you bet on Arizona (-3.5), the Cardinals would have to win by four points or more for you to win the bet. If you bet on Detroit (+3.5), you’d win as long as the Lions don’t lose by more than three. Like all other bets, payouts for point spread bets use that same American odds system. However, because the point of the spread is to make the bet closer to a 50/50 proposition, the odds usually hover around -105 to -115 for both sides.
With totals, you’re betting on whether the combined score of both teams in a game will go over or under a certain number. This is why we’ll also call totals bets “over/under” bets. The total in that Arizona-Detroit game might be 45.5, which means if you bet the over you’re betting the two teams combined will score 46 or more. Betting the under means you think the two teams will score no more than 45. Sometimes the line might end in .0, which makes a tie possible. In this case, all bets are simply refunded.
TwinSpires enables you to build lots of parlay bets. With parlays you combine multiple bets or “legs” into a single wager, with all of them having to win in order for the overall bet to win. Potential payouts can grow quite large, especially as you add more and more legs. But the payouts can be big, too, if you happen to win. At TwinSpires, you’ll also find several prearranged “Same Game Combo” parlays that combine various bets and props for a single game.
Speaking of props or “proposition” bets, TwinSpires features many of these, especially for popular sports like football, baseball and basketball. In fact, a single NFL game (for instance) might have more than a hundred prop bets available.
Props are bets on outcomes not directly tied to a game’s final result, such as on how many rebounds or assists a team will collect or how many yards a running back will gain. There are also options to bet on the first team to reach a certain number of points, what the first scoring play will be and so on.
Bet on season-long or postseason outcomes at nearly any point during the season, and also often before it starts. Examples include a preseason bet on which team will win the division or championship, or a bet on a particular player to win MVP.
Meanwhile, TwinSpires additionally offers a nice selection of live betting wagers. These are bets on a game while it is in progress, and can include moneyline, point spread and total bets as well as various team and individual props (called “Player Specials”).
As the game progresses, the odds will shift to reflect the potential outcome. In other words, a team that was a pregame favorite could become an underdog after falling behind early, at which point you could bet on it and (if it wins) receive a larger payout than if you had bet before the game started.
TwinSpires Sports offers bets on all the major sports as well as on several less common ones. Here are all the options, with parenthetical references indicating the ones available in certain states only:
That’s a longer-than-average list of sports when compared to other online sports betting apps. At TwinSpires Sports you won’t find any bets on e-sports or non-sporting events like the Oscars, but as you can see you won’t have any lack of choices otherwise.
TwinSpires uses a technology platform powered by GAN Limited and the Kambi Group PLC. The website features a clean, blue-and-white color scheme and three-column design common at many online sportsbooks.
The left column features quick links to all sports and current live betting options. On the right is your bet slip. Simply click on bets as you go and they automatically collect there where you can review them and place your bets.
The wide middle column features more quick links to sports and ongoing promotions. Once you select a sport, all of the available games appear there, making it easy to scroll to find your desired contest. Then you can drill down further into the many bets available. You can also check futures bets for each sport as you browse.
One nice feature at TwinSpires Sports is the ability to access relevant statistics to help you handicap games. You can review head-to-head and recent history for each team along with other stats right in the client. When perusing wagers for a particular contest, click “View all stats,” and a new window opens showing this information and more.
Most will find the TwinSpires Sportsbook layout appealing and user-friendly, with minimal differences between the web-based browser version of the site and the app.
TwinSpires Sports offers several ways to fund your account as well as to cash out when you’re ready to do so.
As noted above, if you have a TwinSpires Racing account, you have to create a separate account for TwinSpires Sports. You’ll also be using a separate online wallet, as you cannot transfer funds between the two. However, you can use the same funds for the online sportsbook and casino if you are in a state where the TwinSpires online casino operates.
There is a $10 minimum when depositing. For most methods, the maximum deposit is $9,999. An exception is the TwinSpires Prepaid Play+ card, which has a max deposit of $2,000.
Most of those depositing methods are also available when withdrawing. Here are your choices when cashing out:
Some withdrawal methods have no limits at all (ACH/e-check), while others have a $9,999 maximum (online banking, PayPal) or a $25,000 maximum (TwinSpires Prepaid Play+ card). With some methods such as PayPal, your withdrawal will appear in your account as soon as the sportsbook approves it. A check in the mail, on the other hand, may take seven to 10 business days.
Notice also that TwinSpires Sportsbook currently has casino partnerships in Arizona, Michigan and Pennsylvania that enable users to conduct banking in person at those casino locations. The PayNearMe payment option at CVS and 7-Eleven stores is available as well in some areas served by TwinSpires Sports. Check with your state to confirm availability.
TwinSpires offers a number of ways to get in touch in case any questions or issues arise while using the sportsbook. Both the site and app feature a fairly detailed FAQ section answering a number of common queries. That should be the first step for most and could provide the answers you seek.
You can also take advantage of live chat support available 24/7. Simply click the “Support” icon and someone will soon appear for an online chat. When we tested live chat, a friendly representative was there right away to help us with our questions.
Phone support is available as well at 877-774-7371 (the number is the same regardless of your state). Customer service by phone is available from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. ET each day. For other queries, you can also email TwinSpires support at [email protected] TwinSpires says it answers email 24/7.
Though a relative newcomer, TwinSpires Sports presents a nice, inviting alternative for sports bettors seeking another online sportsbook to try.
