BetRivers Sportsbook account creation

Getting started on BetRivers is as easy as can be. In many cases, you will be placing your first bet in less than 10 minutes.

Downloading the BetRivers app

The first step to placing that first wager is securing access to BetRivers Sportsbook. Depending on the format you’re using, there are a few steps that you must undertake to make things happen.

Android device users likely have an easier time. First, they will need to go into their phone’s settings menu to access the security settings. Once there, it is necessary to tell your phone to accept downloads from unknown sources. If you’ve downloaded other gambling apps before, you’ve probably done this already.

Once that step is complete, simply visit the BetRivers site or Rivers Casino site through your browser. The option to download the BetRivers Android app should be immediately apparent.

Unfortunately, BetRivers does not have an Apple-compatible app just yet. iPhone and iPad users will need to use their web browsers to place their wagers. However, to confirm that you are in the correct physical location, BetRivers requires that you download a geolocation verification app to your phone. Look for an app called GeoGuard, download it and enable it on your device. The app will use your device’s onboard GPS to verify your location.

After getting set up with GeoGuard, you should use the BetRivers site through the browser without issue. We will let you know when the app finally arrives.

Registering on BetRivers

Once you have gained access to the site, the first thing to do will be registering for an account. Look for a yellow button in the upper right corner that says “join now.”

Pressing this button will lead you to BetRivers’ registration screens. You will need to supply BetRivers with several bits of information and identification, so it’s a good idea to have the following information close at hand:

  • Name
  • Email address
  • Date of birth
  • Phone number
  • Mailing address
  • Last four digits of your Social Security number
  • Choice of username
  • Secure password

Rest assured that your information will remain in good hands. BetRivers is a reputable company with excellent safeguards against hacking or other types of misbehavior.

That said, be sure to keep your username and password in a safe place. As you will see, sportsbooks retain your financial information, and you don’t want that to fall into the wrong hands.

BetRivers deposit options

The last step before you begin making wagers is to invest in your new BetRivers account. Like most online sportsbooks and casinos, BetRivers maintains several options to make a deposit, and hopefully at least one of them will work for your financial situation.

The options to deposit on BetRivers are:

  • Credit cards
    • Visa
    • Mastercard
    • Discover
  • Electronic check (ACH)
  • Electronic wallet
    • PayPal
  • BetRivers Play+ Prepaid Card
  • PayNearMe (7-Eleven, Family Dollar, and CVS stores)
  • Cash at cage (see more details below)

Don’t forget to enter bonus code PLAY250 when you make that first deposit. Even if you’re not planning on spending the full amount, a 100% match will give you plenty of extra money in your account.

Cash at cage

Where available, depositing and withdrawing to your online account via the casino cashier of the land-based partner is an efficient option. Check out the list below to see if there is an option in your area, but we recommend double-checking with the casino that it’s available before making a trip just for that purpose:

  • BetRivers Sportsbook PA. Cash at cage is available at Rivers Casinos. 777 Casino Drive in Pittsburgh, and 1001 N Delaware Ave in Philadelphia
  • BetRivers Sportsbook IL: Rivers Casino, 3000 S River Rd, Des Plaines
  • BetRivers Sportsbook MI: Cash at cage may eventually be possible at Little River Casino Resort, 2700 Orchard Why, Manistee

Sports betting at BetRivers

Those who are new to online sports betting might think that online offerings would pale compared to their live counterparts. The opposite is true — online sportsbook technology has allowed virtual sportsbooks to surpass any retail location’s opportunities.

Types of bets

For one thing, there are more types of bets available online than live. There is tremendous flexibility in terms of combination and hybrid wagers that players can make. One type of wagering has done nothing less than changing the way we think about sports betting.

Live betting

One of the most significant differences in BetRivers Sportsbook (and other online books) is the prevalence of live betting. Live betting, or in game wagering, allows players to place wagers on games already in progress.

A live bet is technically a form of proposition wager. However, today’s technology allows BetRivers to drill down to an extreme granular level within each game. It is possible to wager on the outcome of events as minute as individual plays.

The result is that each contest could potentially offer more than 100 individual bets throughout the match. Both gamblers and bookmakers appreciate the ability to place more wagers.

Moneylines

The moneyline is one of the most common wagers in all of sports betting because of its simplicity. It is nothing more than a bet on which team will win the game, regardless of other factors.

However, moneylines are distinguished by their preset payout amounts on each game. The three-digit number next to each team conveys valuable information about the ratio of wager to payout that a bettor can expect.

Negative moneylines indicate that the team is the favorite. Thus, the listed number is the amount that a player must wager to win $100. In other words, for example, a team named at -200 means that bettors must put up $200 to win $100.

On the other hand, positive moneylines denote the underdog in the game. So the listed number is the amount that a $100 will win. For instance, a winning bet on a team at +200 will pay out $200 for every $100 wagered.

Point spreads

Point spreads, or spread bets, are wagers on the eventual margin of victory in a contest. The sportsbook will estimate what the eventual margin will be (the spread). Bettors then wager whether the favorite will exceed that margin or the underdog will overcome it.

The favorite is denoted by the negative spread amount next to its name. Conversely, the underdog will have a positive spread number.

The moneyline number next to a spread bet is the payout ratio that the wager will pay. This number will always be negative and will hover around -110. The extra $10 that makes a bet not a straight 1:1 wager is the amount of house money you must pay.

Totals

Totals, or over/under wagers, are bets on how many points that two teams in a contest will combine to score. The margin of victory and outcome of the game is irrelevant in determining this bet.

The sportsbook will set an estimate for what it believes the margin will be. Then, players will wager whether they believe that this estimate is too low or too high.

The estimate usually ends with a half-point decimal. The sportsbook adds the decimal to ensure that no ties could happen, which would generate a bunch of pushed bets and waste everyone’s time.

The mechanics of this wager have led to its more common alias. Many players and bookmakers alike will refer to this type of bet as an “over/under.”

Futures

All wagers are on events in the future, so the futures bet might seem like a misnomer. However, a futures bet is on an event that will happen far into the future and usually involves some cumulative outcome. So typical futures wagers are on the winners of championships or season awards.

These types of bets are incredibly speculative because of the tremendous number of variables that determine their outcome. As a result, it is not uncommon that every futures bet on the board will get listed as an underdog. Even the most likely outcome is less likely to occur versus all the other possibilities.

Futures bets tend to be expressed as moneylines. However, if you divide a positive moneyline by 100, you can get the wager’s straight odds. For instance, a team listed at +300 is a 3:1 underdog, since 300/100 = 3.

Propositions

We already mentioned the most popular type of proposition going today — the live bet. However, proposition wagers, or prop bets, are a broad category of wager that captures most other bets not covered by the labels above.

A prop bet tends to be a wager regarding a partial or ancillary game outcome. In other words, the result of a prop bet may or may not have much to do with the eventual outcome of the game itself.

Propositions usually have to do with partial game results or milestones to be achieved in the game. For example, any kind of bet about which team will “win” the third quarter of play or whether an individual player will score more than 20 points is a prop bet.

Parlays

The last primary type of bet that you will find on BetRivers is the parlay wager. Parlays are combination wagers that smash together many individual bets into a single megabet.

Each constituent bet in a parlay is known as a leg. Once you have chosen all the legs you want, BetRivers will generate an aggregate odds amount for the entire wager.

Parlays are high-risk, high-reward ventures because of one simple rule. Namely, you must select every single leg correctly to get paid.

So, even if you were to pick the first 11 games of an NFL Sunday correctly, a last-second field goal in Game 12 could doom the entire bet.

Because of the risk for ruin, payouts for successful parlays can be relatively high. A successful parlay with more than 10 legs could easily pay out more than $100,000 for an initial investment of less than $50. However, understand that there’s a reason the sportsbook will make such lucrative offers. Most of the time, that money is safe and sound, and it’s a bad bet for the bettor.

Buy Out option

One last feature to mention is the Buy Out option on BetRivers. This feature, which is also known as the cash-out option or live ticket system, allows you to take a payout on open bets that are still unsettled. If BetRivers determines that certain conditions have been met, you will be able to elect to close out the wager and receive an offered payout. In effect, every bet on BetRivers could be a proposition wager because of the Buy Out option.

Available sports on BetRivers

There are numerous options for sports on which you can bet on BetRivers. Of course, all of the major sports are available, but so are many more exotic sports from around the world. Most of the time, if it’s televised, it’s bet-able.

Here is a list of sports you can try:

  • Baseball
  • Basketball
  • Cricket
  • Cycling
  • Darts
  • Football
  • Golf
  • Soccer
  • Table tennis
  • Tennis

BetRivers Sportsbook history

BetRivers is the primary sportsbook brand for Rush Street Interactive. Aside from SugarHouse Sportsbook in New Jersey, all of the company’s sportsbooks bear the BetRivers name. Thanks to a rebrand of its Philadelphia-area land-based property in 2019, all but the Garden State offerings function under Rivers’ branding.

The book itself began as one of the first online sportsbooks in Pennsylvania. Since launch, it has distinguished itself with its speedy software and loyalty program, the latter of which is uncommon for sportsbooks to offer.

BetRivers is active in four states and should launch in two more in the coming months.

Pennsylvania

BetRivers launched a Pennsylvania sportsbook in June 2019, partnering with Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board oversees and regulates the BetRivers Sportsbook PA. Because Pennsylvania also allows online casinos, it is possible to access casino games through the BetRivers site in the Keystone State.

Indiana

BetRivers Sportsbook was one of the first online sportsbooks to debut in Indiana sports betting. The Hoosier State welcomed the site in October 2019 on the same day that DraftKings Sportsbook came online. BetRivers has chosen to partner with French Lick Resort Casino in Indiana. The Indiana Gaming Commission maintains regulatory sports betting authority throughout the state. Indiana also has a strict prohibition on online casino play, so it is impossible to do anything aside from sports betting on BetRivers Indiana.

Colorado

BetRivers launched a Colorado sportsbook on May 1, 2020. BetRivers partnered with Triple Crown Casino in Cripple Creek, understanding that its presence in the Centennial State will require it to pay 10% tax on its net proceeds. Currently, esports is not available for betting in Colorado, but hopefully, with more growth opportunities, Colorado legislation will eventually work toward that end.

Illinois

On June 18, 2020, BetRivers launched the first Illinois online sportsbook. To accomplish this goal, BetRivers partnered with Rivers Casino in Des Plaines.

Iowa

While BetRivers has not launched in Iowa yet, it does have its land-based partner in place so we expect to see it sooner than later. It is partnered with Wild Rose Entertainment, which has several casinos throughout the state.

Michigan

BetRivers also has its land-based partner lined up in Michigan: the Little River Casino Resort in Manistee. We expect BetRivers to be among the first launch when Michigan online gambling goes live in the near future.

Tennessee

Sportsbetting is expected to launch as soon as November 1 in Tennessee. We’ll be paying close attention to see if BetRivers is among the early movers. There are no land-based partners for sportsbooks in TN

Virginia

Another state expected to launch sooner than later, Virginia sportsbetting will be online only. We will update here if and when BetRivers launches within the state.

The best parts of Bet Rivers Sportsbook

BetRivers is a significant star in the sports betting constellation dotting the US. There are several things that the site does well. Two of those elements, in particular, stand out from the crowd.

Speed

The first thing to notice is how quickly everything moves and navigates on BetRivers. There is never any lag time, and it’s easy to move from one section of the site to another. In an activity like live betting, where seconds count, it’s good that BetRivers won’t be the reason that you’re slowing down.

Loyalty program

BetRivers is also one of the few sportsbooks that have an active loyalty program for its customers. Many sportsbooks rely on their betting options alone, but BetRivers seeks to reward players and garner repeat business through its iRush Rewards program. The program allows you to earn store points and loyalty points. The store points are redeemable for several prizes and cash equivalents, while the loyalty points increase your stature and generate a growing pile of perks for you.

The parts of BetRivers that need improvement

Of course, not everything is perfect, and BetRivers is no exception. A couple of areas on the site could use some work, and it’s good to know about them upfront.

Layout

The first thing that you’ll notice when you visit is the site presentation and layout. To be fair, BetRivers uses an attractive navy and gold theme to set off the script on the site.

Unfortunately, the site is quite busy. There are so many banners and sidebars and pop-ups that it makes things unwieldy. The section of the site dedicated to players getting wins in a row is fun, but ultimately unnecessary — particularly when it relegates the betting slip to a pop-up tab that you have to keep refreshing.

As is often the case with things, simple is usually better. A revamp of the site to a cleaner design would be a welcome change.

Help center/support

You hope for things to go well, but errors and mistakes are part of every human endeavor. So a sportsbook needs a reliable support infrastructure to address those situations.

BetRivers could do with a refresh on both the self-guided FAQ and the support options onsite. The FAQ is unwieldy and difficult to navigate — if you have multiple questions, you’ll likely have to start the entire help center process repeatedly.

The two support options — chat and email — are also insufficient to address modern players’ needs. Though the discussion is nice, it is only available during limited hours. If there’s a big bet with lots of money on the line, the last thing that a player wants to do is deal with an errant or nonresponsive support system.

FAQ about BetRivers Sportsbook

In what states is BetRivers active?

BetRivers is an active sportsbook in Pennsylvania, Indiana, Illinois and Colorado, with a launch in Michigan and Iowa slated to happen sometime in the next few months.

Do I have to be a resident of one of those states to place a bet?

No. BetRivers accepts wagers from anyone physically located inside one of the states listed above.

Can I place a bet from outside the states?

No. Both state and federal laws prohibit wagering from across state lines. The reason that Apple users have to download GeoGuard is so that BetRivers can keep an eye on every player’s location. Service will get denied if the system detects that you are outside one of BetRivers’ host states.

What age must you be to place a sports bet on BetRivers?

Check your local restrictions to be sure, but a player must be 21 or older to place a bet in most cases.

How can I withdraw my money from BetRivers?

If you want to make a withdrawal on BetRivers, there are a few options available to you. Withdrawals can be processed via one of the following methods:

  • BetRivers Play+ card
  • Online banking (ACH)
  • Check by mail

Can I play casino games on BetRivers?

You can play casino games on BetRivers if you are located in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania allows sites to offer games like slots, blackjack, video poker, roulette and other standard casino games online.

However, Indiana has a strict prohibition against online casinos, so inhabitants can only place wagers on sports. Colorado and Illinois do not allow online casinos, either, so the sportsbook will be the only functional arm there.
