The total number of accounts created at New Jersey’s regulated online poker sites and casinos stands at 126,231, according to information provided by the NJ Division of Gaming Enforcement.
That total represents an increase of 16,285 accounts over the past week.
Below is a chart of the weekly account creation stats provided by the DGE:
As the chart shows, initial growth was intense, followed by a three-week period of steady growth that has now given way to somewhat reduced rates of account creation.
This may be a temporary phenomenon resulting from the holidays, or it may indicate that the initial wave of customers interested in New Jersey online gambling is starting to ebb.
Numbers for the last three weeks of January will ultimately reveal which is the case.
Here are the week-by-week account totals to date:
As always, a few important caveats must be attached to these numbers.
The numbers only represent raw accounts created, so one person creating multiple accounts would be counted multiple times. And the numbers say nothing about the number of accounts that have deposited, or are currently active.
The number is best thought of as a rough approximation of the overall momentum for regulated online gambling in New Jersey.
Another informal metric for gauging the momentum of regulated online gambling in NJ is the field size for the largest Sunday tournament among the state’s online poker sites: The PartyPoker NJ Sunday $50k Guaranteed.
This Sunday’s tournament at PartyPoker NJ attracted a field of 272 players, a drop of 2 from the previous week:
The initial running of the tournament saw only 173 entrants. Since then, the player pool has hovered steadily in the 250-275 range.
