GeoComply has launched a new system to allow US gamblers to self-exclude in multiple states and with multiple operators.
The newly minted PlayPause tool will be made freely available to US sports betting and online gambling firms.
The new system taps into GeoComply’s existing geolocation network to help prevent those incidences. It will also be integrated into the same back-office.
“We always looking for ways to leverage technology in a meaningful and responsible way,” said GeoComply chairman and co-founder Anna Sainsbury.
“PlayPause is not only an important compliance tool, but a way we can unite the industry and regulators to deepen their shared commitment to responsible gaming and consumer protection.”
The system was announced as part of Responsible Gaming Education Week. It will be funded by newly established non-profit Conscious Gaming.
Operators can also use the data from the tool to identify potential problem gamblers and intervene before real issues arise.
National self-exclusion systems are legally required in markets like the UK and Denmark.
Keith Whyte, executive director of the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), praised the new system.
“Creating a multi-state self-exclusion tool has long been a goal of all stakeholders that are committed to responsible gaming,” Whyte said.
“The NCPG applauds the creation of PlayPause – this is a prime example of how technology and innovation can be leveraged to advance consumer protection and foster a more effective responsible gaming framework across the gambling and sports betting industries.”
But several stakeholders have flagged concerns about the relative lack of consideration given to responsible gambling.
